Madeline and Joseph Woolfolk Thomas Award For AY 2007-2008, approximately $7,500 to be used toward tuition, and room and board. Merit based. English majors with 70 total hours, 9 hours in English beyond 102, overall G.P.A. 3.3 or higher, 3.3 in English Extended to 23Mar07
Harry L. and Cecilia H. Smith Scholarship For AY 2007-2008, approximately $8,500 to be used toward tuition, room and board. Merit and need based.  English majors, 9 hours  in English beyond 102, overallG.P.A. 3.3 or higher, 3.3 in English Extended to 23Mar07
Mary Phyllis Reidley Scholarship For AY 2007-2008, two awards will be given. One usually covers a full year of tuition, room and board; one usually covers approximately a half- year. Merit and need based.  English majors, 9 hours  in English beyond 102, overall G.P.A. 3.3 or higher, 3.3 in English Extended to 23Mar07
Mary E. Burton Award $100 Presented annually to the graduating English major with the highest scholastic standing. 9 Mar 07


Graduate Scholarships and Awards

University Fellowships Currently $20,000/yr plus tuition remission Merit based; Ph.D. applicants only Jan 15. The Director of Graduate Studies nominates outstanding Ph.D. applicants for these university-wide awards.  Applicants must have a GTA application and a complete admissions file by Jan 15.  No separate application is required.
Graduate Teaching Assistantships PhD Level $20,000/yr plus tuition remission
MA Level
$15,500/yr
plus tuition remission
Merit based; Ph.D. and M.A. applicants and continuing M.A. students not previously funded. JAN 15.
Plattus Teaching Award Varies; usually $500-$1,000 All English-department GTAs who are currently teaching are eligible to apply Feb. 15


Creative Writing Scholarships and Awards

Award Amount Eligibility Deadline
Kentuckiana Metroversity 2008 Writing Competition Prizes of $200 (first place) and $100 (second place) will be awarded in each category in two seperate divisions-undergraduate and graduate. Open to any student registered during the 2007-2008 academic year in one or more classes at a Metroversity institution. Submitted by mail February 14, 2008 or submitted in person to Paul Griner by February 15, 2008.
Creative Writing Scholarship Varies Annually Creative writing contest for undergraduate and graduate students.  DO NOT have to be  English Major to apply. April 20, 2007
SARA-JEAN MCDOWELL
CREATIVE WRITING AWARD
The Award is for $500.   It is given annually to a single student. Creative writing contest for graduate students.  Students Do Not have to be graduate students in English to apply. April 20, 2007
The Calvino Prize First place: $1,000 and publication. 
Second place: $300
All graduate and undergraduate students.  Faculty and employees of University of Louisville may not apply. October 15, 2007
Axton Postdoctoral Fellowships  $25,000 a year for two years, plus benefits.  One fellowship in poetry and one in fiction.  Writers who have received an MA, MFA, or PhD in Creative Writing within the past five years.  Search Closed
