Class Description:
Rewriting the Gothic--a WR course
We will begin with definitions of the Gothic and a classic eighteenth-century Gothic novel, Radcliffe's A Sicilian Romance. We will end with a modern reinterpretation of the Gothic, Fowles' The Collector.
But most of our attention will be on texts from the nineteenth century: Austen's Northanger Abbey, Polidori's The Vampyre, LeFanu's Carmilla, James' Washington Square, Conrad's Heart of Darkness plus several shorter texts.
Requirements: participation in an electronic discussion list, participation in class discussion, reading quizzes, research, 3-4 academic essays.
Special Notes:
Prerequisite: Englishi 102 or equivalent.
