102 - 31: Intermediate College Writing - WC
Spring 2009
Meeting Times: TTh 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm
Room: MB 135
Registration Number: 6852
Class Description:
In
this class, we will explore how "genre" functions in both
academic and popular texts, such as magazine editorials, scholarly
essays, restaurant menus, and 80's hair metal. You will choose a
genre to investigate, and over the course of the semester, you will
produce several essays, which will give you practice conducting both
library and field research. For your final project, you will
synthesize your findings in an 8-10 page essay. Overall, you can
expect to produce 20-25 pages of revised prose.
Writing is learned
through continual practice. The class sessions will provide a space
for you to experiment with new techniques, to wrestle with difficult
ideas, and to examine the writing of your peers. I will offer you
some tips on how to improve, but class sessions will usually follow
the workshop model; you will be expected to work collaboratively with
your classmates. In many ways, this class is not just preparation for
the writing you will do in other courses; it is also preparation for
your professional careers, where you will frequently work in teams
with other employees.
