Class Description:

This writing-intensive course will introduce English majors (and others interested in the study of literature) to some of the vocabularies, interpretive lenses, and argumentative strategies that make up the discipline. We will read a range of nineteenth-century American texts drawn from various genres, including short fiction, poetry (both conventional and experimental), essays, drama, and at least one novel.


Expectations: Regular attendance and participation in class discussions. Course work will include several essays, unannounced reading quizzes, and at least one examination.
