Intensive study of 10-12 plays by Shakespeare. In class, I do
my best to promote lively discusssion of the plays with an aim
to understanding the dramatic strategies Shakespeare uses in
his effort to entertain a diverse audience. Although some
attention is paid to situating the plays as part of Renaiassance England, I focus more thinking through how
the plays have been constantly adapted in order to for
them to stay relevant and popular. Consequently we usually
look at several versions of a play and imagine alternate
stagings. Some flexibility in play selection; final
reading schedule to be fixed in class.
Writing requirements include Journals, peer responses, a take home midterm and
a final project, the parameters of which will be established by the class.
