672 - 01: History of Rhetoric II
Spring 2005
Meeting Times: TR 2:30pm - 3:45pm
Room: HM210
Registration Number: 6500
Class Description:
This seminar will examine eighteenth- and nineteenth-century U.S. rhetoric with a major focus on nineteenth-century women's rhetoric. We will read the rhetorical theory of Hugh Blair and George Campbell, generally accepted as the major influences on nineteenth-century U.S. rhetoric. However, we will look, too, at French influences that have been largely ignored. In examining women's rhetoric, we will read primary and secondary texts as well as recent historiographical accounts of the role of women's rhetoric. We will spend at least one class period at the Filson Historical Society, and those who wish to pursue an archival project may do so with help from the archives staff and free of the normal charge for use.
