Class Description: This course surveys British literature from the fourteenth century to the eighteenth century. Because the material from this period may be more appropriately the study of a full-year course if not a lifetime, we will concentrate upon selected texts in this semester. We will read and interpret those works in literary and broader social contexts they are embedded in, and in doing so we will also pay attention to changing cultural and aesthetic values. In other words, we will read texts not only for what they state or imply but also for an understanding of the contexts of their production and consumption and what impact these contexts have upon the values accorded to particular texts and genres.
