Advising in the English Major

To become an English major, you must first enroll in and complete English 310 with a grade of "C-" or better.  Then you must go to the Arts and Sciences Advising Center in Gardiner Hall and formally declare the major. At that point, your records will be sent to the English Department and we will establish a file for you. We will contact you by mail to notify you of your acceptance into the major and to request that you make an initial advising appointment with the Director of Undergraduate Studies in English (call 852-6801) to review your program.

NEW ADVISING PROCEDURES FOR ENGLISH MAJORS

Effective Fall 2006.

In an effort to improve the Major and respond to student concerns, the English Department is changing the advising procedures for all English majors. These new procedures are designed to make the advising relationship more productive, continuous, and expeditious for English majors. All advising will be handled by a four person advising committee.  Advisors will serve three year terms on this committee, ensuring that most students will have the same advisor for most of their career as English majors.  The Committee for 2006-2007 will be:

Advisor                        e-mail address                                      Students last name beginning with:

Dr. Beth Willey             aewilley@louisville.edu                        A-E

Dr. Tamara Yohannes   tjyoha01@louisville.edu                       F-Ma

Dr. Alan Golding          acgold01@louisville.edu                       Mc-R

Dr. Aaron Jaffe            aaron.jaffe@louisville.edu                     S-Z

More importantly, we are implementing an “Advising Hold” on registration for Spring semester for all English majors.  The hold will be lifted when you discuss your registration plan for Spring 2007 with your assigned advisor.

The “Advising Hold” is meant to ensure good communication between advisors and majors, not to be yet another obstacle in registering for classes.  In order to keep it from becoming a burden, we are encouraging English majors to handle their consultations about Spring Registration via e-mail.  You need only to send an e-mail message to your advisor with a detailed plan of the classes you intend to take in Spring 2007.  Your advisor is also more than happy to meet with you face to face to discuss any academic questions you might have.

Please plan ahead and make arrangements to either e-mail or meet with your advisor well before early registration for Spring semester, October 31-November 13.  If you have any questions about the new advising procedures, feel free to contact me or your assigned advisor.

We hope that these new procedures will help improve student satisfaction with the English Major and we look forward to getting your feedback.
